County

The county where the address is found.

If a match code of 0 or 1 is returned, the county will be identified (in the column named “County”). For match code 4, Allocator will use the match city to identify the county. For other match codes, Allocator will attempt to identify the county based on the source city. If the city name is misspelled, the county will not likely be found. This is of particular importance in the KY, LA, and NY MTA modules because taxes are assessed at the county level. If there are numerous problems due to misspelling, correct the spelling in the ASCII file and reprocess it. Otherwise, change the spelling by editing the source city name.  Use the Find and Replace Source City function to edit  multiple misspellings of a city.

Kentucky

If the address is a good match (match code 0 or 1), the county is determined by plotting the address to a map which contains county boundaries.

For poor matches, the city name appearing in the source address is matched to a corresponding county.  If the city is found in multiple counties, the most populous county is returned.  If the city name is grossly misspelled, a county name will not be returned.

Other States

If the address is a good match (match code 0 or 1), the county is determined by the FIPS code geo-coded to the matching address.

For poor matches, the city name appearing in the source address is matched to a corresponding county.  If the city is found in multiple counties, the most populous county is returned.  If the city name is grossly misspelled, a county name will not be returned.
