Position Overview
The Unclaimed Property Specialist is responsible for identifying, researching, reporting, and remitting unclaimed property in compliance with applicable state and federal regulations. This role also includes serving as a Premium Tax Preparer, ensuring accurate preparation, filing, and reconciliation of premium taxes in accordance with regulatory requirements. The position requires strong analytical skills, regulatory knowledge, and attention to detail to support compliance and financial accuracy.
Duties and responsibilities
Unclaimed Property Duties
- Review data to identify dormant or inactive accounts to determine unclaimed property status for monitoring and maintenance.
- Conduct due diligence outreach to property owners in accordance with statutory requirements.
- Prepare and file unclaimed property reports with appropriate state jurisdictions.
- Maintain compliance with varying state unclaimed property laws and reporting deadlines.
- Maintain detailed documentation and audit trails for all reported property.
- Respond to state inquiries, audits, and compliance reviews.
- Monitor legislative and regulatory changes related to unclaimed property.
Premium Tax Preparation Duties
- Prepare and file premium tax returns accurately and within required deadlines.
- Analyze financial data to ensure proper calculation of premium taxes.
- Maintain compliance with multi-state premium tax regulations.
- Data gathering, work paper creation and organization, tax preparation, electronic and paper submissions, amendments, reconciliation of tax and payment accounts, and audit research
- Contact states and local taxing jurisdictions on clients’ behalf
- Support audits and respond to inquiries related to premium tax filings.
- Prepare schedules and gather and verify documentation.
- Review documentation and materials for accuracy, legibility, and reasonableness and perform tests for quality control and provide suggestions for enhancements.
Training & Research
- Maintain tax records and conduct tax research projects based on industry specific state and local tax return instructions and tax laws.
- Analyze prior years’ data for trends
- Assist with special projects as directed by management

Qualifications & Skills
- Education and/or Experience – Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Business Administration, Accounting or Finance related coursework
- Experience with Unclaimed Property compliance is a plus.

- Knowledge of Excel, Access, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint, the internet, and ability to learn new software skills

- Some work outside normal business hours and some weekends may be required during tax season
